5:45pm — Flash Flood Watch is cancelled,
The flash flood watch for portions of Kansas and Missouri has been cancelled. A cold front has pushed south of the area late this afternoon. Although showers and thunderstorms will continue along and south of the Missouri river into the evening Hours, Any Heavy Rainfall will be brief, And Total Amounts will be well below that needed to produce flash flooding.

5pm – Bryan Busby says the big concern now is flooding.

From Lisa Teachman: Here’s what we’ve encountered in southern Johnson County on the Kansas side. Some low spots on rural roads have rushing water. Most of the creeks and streams we’ve passed through have been holding the water just fine.

4pm – Heavy rain reported in Lafayette County.

3:45pm – Flash Flood Watch now in effect until 1 am Wednesday, The flash flood watch is now in effect for Portions of Kansas and Missouri, Including The Following areas, In Kansas, Johnson Ks, Leavenworth And Wyandotte. In Missouri, Caldwell, Carroll, Chariton, Clay, Clinton, jackson, Lafayette, Linn Mo, Livingston, Macon, Platte and ray.

Until 1 am cdt Wednesday

Showers and thunderstorms will continue tonight as a cold front moves through the region. Due to the slow movement of the storms, Heavy Rainfall From one to two inches with locally higher amounts are possible. In addition, Brief But Intense periods of rainfall are also likely. The threat of heavy rainfall will diminish after daybreak on Wednesday as the front moves into northern Arkansas.

Low-lying areas, Especially Near Creeks and rivers will be most susceptible to flash flooding.

A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.

3pm — “Blinding rain” reported near Ottawa, Kan. Heavy rain also falling in Lawrence.

2:02 p.m. — Car stranded in water on southbound Bruce R. Watkins at 63rd Street.

1:50 p.m. — Car reported stranded in high water at Blue Parkway and Cleveland Avenue. Driver able to walk to higher ground.

We’re once again bringing you the very latest information on the severe weather this weekend in the Kansas City viewing area and beyond.

10:55 p.m. — Heavy rain falling over KMBC’s TV station in Kansas City. Busby says a line of the heaviest rain stretches down to Paola.

10:35 p.m. — Flash flood warnings issued until 4:30 a.m. for Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Platte counties. At 10:15 p.m., a trained spotter in the city of Leavenworth reported 1.42 inches of rainfall had fallen. Additional heavy rainfall is expected in those three counties. Up to 4 inches of water was reported on U.S. Highway 24-40 and Hemphill Road in Leavenworth County. In addition, 7th Street and Church in Tonganoxie will be closed due to high water.

5:28 p.m. — The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for the metro until midnight.

Earlier in the evening, a tornado warning was issued for Atchison and Nodaway counties in Kansas. It was a radar-indicated tornado. There was no confirmed touchdown. The weather service canceled the tornado warning at 5:22 p.m.

3:55 p.m. — A line of tornado-producing thunderstorms is still west of Topeka, Kan., and is expected to move into the region later tonight.

“We’re more concerned with hail, high winds and the possibility of flooding, but we cannot rule out the possibility of an isolated tornado,” KMBC Chief Meteorologist Bryan Busby said.

12:52 p.m. – KMBC meteorologist Lisa Teachman there is a slight risk for severe weather across the entire Kansas City viewing area. However, farther west toward Topeka, Kan., a moderate risk has been added. It looks like it’s going to be another busy day/evening/night in the FirstAlert Weather Center. Any storm that develops could produce large hail, gusty winds and even tornadoes.

8:11 p.m. – KMBC Chief Meteorologist Bryan Busby said that radar indicaites that the area around St. Joseph has indications that a tornado may form.

We will bring you the very latest information on weather conditions this weekend in the Kansas City viewing area and beyond.

Be sure to click your F5 button to refresh this liveblog.

E-mail us your weather and roads conditions at news@kmbc.com, and we’ll include them as soon as we can. Open up a second browser window and check out all the weather resources we have on the KMBC.com homepage. There are links to road conditions, KC Scout Cams, cancellations, Interactive Radar (with Futurecast), live radar, weather maps and more.

Remember, you can also upload your storm pictures to our u local section. We’ll show them on air.

***

6:30 — Snow-packed roadways makes for slow going, according to meterologist Erin Little. The snowfall is quickly dwindling, but there are still heavy pockets of snowfall right along the state line.

There may be another hour of snow before the worst of it passes.

There will be freeze warnings overnight and into Sunday.

After this storm dies out, there may be more severe weather in the forecast for Monday night and Tuesday morning, and possibly even later in the week.

6:00 – We’re hearing thunder with the snow outside the KMBC station, but the snow should taper off after 7.

5:50 — The snow is beginning to slacken, although caution is still urged on the roads.

4:55 – The snow may seem lighter in some areas, but in others there is still heavy snow and sleet. Dry air may move in to help diminish the wintry conditions by 7 p.m.

4:10 — Kansas City has now implemented Phase 1 of the snow ordinance, which means if you don’t have snow tires on your car, you may be ticketed.

While areas have seen lighter conditions, but more snow will follow up.

3:45 — The KCI Airport announces that they have reopened at 3:35 p.m.

3:30 — Plenty of moisture still to work with. There is freezing rain to the east of the metro, with snow and sleet all through the I-35 corridor and through the rest of the metro. 2-5 inches of accumulation is still possible.

3:00 — Heavy snow and pockets of sleet are falling through most of the viewing area. Most of the 435 loop is affected. Travel will be hazardous.

2:40 — With the snow falling, visibility is low and roads are dangerous. We have heavy pockets of snow rather than freezing rain or sleet.

2:19 — KCI Airport is temporarily closed due to winter weather. Check www.flykci.com for flight information.

1:45 — The roads are slick even on treated surfaces, so drivers should be wary. The snow has moved in and mixed with the sleet and freezing rain. There are possibly several hours left of snowfall before the storm moves past us.

1:00 — A number of reports of accidents now that the freezing rain and sleet. There is snow in Overland Park at 87th and Antioch.

12:30 – Snow was starting to turn to sleet in the eastern part of Kansas City.

12:20 — Snow still coming later this afternoon. Rain is starting to freeze on branches and on some streets. Flooding may be a danger around the region. Icy in spots through the afternoon, with snow accumulating later on.

The plane carrying the returning KU men’s basketball team was diverted away from Forbes Field in Topeka due to the weather.

11:00 — Heavier rain falling. KC Scout cams show traffic slowing down a bit because of the wet roads.

10:30 — Snow still expected this afternoon — 2 to 5 inches of snow to fall in Kansas City area.

9:50 — Sleet, freezing rain falling in western part of Kansas City metro. KMBC’s Bryan Busby says rain will change over to heavy snow at about noon.

8:08 — Light rain reported in Mission, Kan.

8:03 a.m. — Rain reported in Lawrence, Kan.

6:55 a.m. — Merry Jackson said it’s snowing and sleeting in Mound City, Mo.

5:41 a.m. – “We’re kind of in a lull right now. We’re in a dry slot. It’s just as it sounds. A dry portion of the storm system has pushed into Kansas City,” KMBC meteorologist Lisa Teachman said. “But we are watching some new development down in southeastern Kansas and also southwestern Missouri. As it intensifies and starts to move in our direction, that’s what we’re going to be watching out for later today.”

KMBC Chief Meteorologist Bryan Busby said there will be pockets of rain, sleet and snow from now until noon.

“If you have any sort of errands you have to run, I think you’ll be fine until about noon or so. It’ll be the afternoon through the early evening where we start to see more of a wintry mix turning over to snow, and it will be accumulating pretty rapidly during the afternoon hours,” Busby said.

A total of 4 inches to 8 inches of snow could fall in Kansas City. Up to 1 foot of snow is possible in some parts of the metro area.
